MTV Video Music Awards Lose Viewers for 3rd Year

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Ratings for the controversy-free MTV Video
Music Awards fell for the third consecutive year despite airing for
the first time on a Sunday, when TV viewership is at its highest.

According to Nielsen Media Research, the Aug. 29 event drew 10.3
million viewers, compared to 10.71 million viewers in 2003, when
Madonna (news - web sites) smooched Britney Spears (news) and
Christina Aguilera (news). The record of 11.95 million was set in
2002.

Sunday's event took place at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, the
first time in the event's 21-year history that it has not been held in
New York or Los Angeles. The telecast had to compete with NBC's Summer
Olympics (news - web sites) closing-night ceremony.

The tally was enough to give MTV the highest-rated program of the
night among both broadcast and cable competition in its core
demographic of persons 12-34.

Holding the show is Miami will guarantee a lackluster showing of stars.
